Livestock

In 2012, we offered our lower fields to a local shepherd—and suddenly…we were learning to be shepherds as well. We raised between 10 and 40 at a given time. They were tame, lovely and well cared for. We spent a great deal of time with them—and knew them all by name. We also raised a variety of chickens and ducks (Sweedish Blue, Rouens, Pekins, Anconas, Bard Rocks, Rhode Island Reds Ameraucana and many more.

Our gardens produced great bounty. We grew a variety of herbs and vegetables—and added medicinals and cutting flowers. In the right seasons, we had an abundance of fresh kale, lettuces and such. Out of season, we packed our root cellar and enjoy canned goods and preserves.

Products & Passion

From the bounty of the garden came canned beets (straight or sweet), beans (plain or spicy) and tomatoes. Our pepper jelly and apple chutney's were popular in 2013. There were always be other products based on what was plentiful—and what we felt like trying or you felt like eating. One year, the apple trees allowed for tons of maple and regular applesauce, conserves, ciders and such. We also made a variety of bath salts and herbal blends.
